What We Believe

Unity is a spiritual community as well as a way of life. We seek to honor the spirit in all people and in all life. We believe there are many paths to God but only one God. We realize there is spiritual truth in many of the world's religious traditions. We believe each person is on his or her own unique spiritual path. We honor and support each person's spiritual journey, trusting in the oneness of the indwelling spirit. Our commitment as a spiritual community is to honor the spirit of God as it expresses in and through all of us. Together we journey to create heaven on earth.

We are part of a worldwide Christian organization with a positive approach to life. We believe in an all powerful, everywhere present God of good. We view God as Spirit, best understood by us as LOVE. We teach that God is Principle, the one and only Spirit behind, in, and through all things, visible and invisible. God is active within us and all around us. There can be no separation from God in truth, only in perception.

As Unity truth students, we deny the existence of any power or presence opposed to God. We acknowledge evil appearances and suffering in the world, but we attribute these to human ignorance and misuse of God's law of life. We affirm that God works in and through all things for good. We make a commitment to align with God's loving guidance and to practice forgiveness. We support each other in transforming our world as we change our minds and align ourselves with a loving God.

We believe in the divinity of Jesus. We also honor his humanity. The man, Jesus, expressed his divine potential and sought to show us how to express ours, as well. We speak of Jesus as our Way shower. We believe each of us is a child of God and has the same potential to come into the full expression of our divinity as did Jesus. We often say that Unity is the religion of Jesus rather than about Jesus. We take to heart his words and seek practical application of His teachings in our lives.

We have a strong belief in the power of prayer. We view our mind as our connecting link with God, or Divine Mind. We teach that thoughts held in mind produce after their own kind. Prayer is not seen as a technique for changing God, but for transforming our minds, and thus changing us. We are transformed as we connect with Spirit through prayer and meditation. We believe quite simply that prayer is our "talking" to God and meditation is our taking the time to listen to God. We encourage each person to develop his or her own life of prayer.

Our main teachings in Unity come from the Bible. Our focus is on the underlying spiritual truths that are taught in and through the Bible. Unity seeks to relate religion to daily needs, affirming that for every need there is God's perfect answer. We honor writings in other spiritual traditions that support us in finding God's truth in our lives. Each person is encouraged to find his or her own spiritual path and to study what supports his or her spiritual journey to knowing God.

We have a strong belief in our connectedness with each other through the power of the indwelling spirit. We truly are a Unity community based on Jesus' commandments to love God and to love our neighbors as ourselves.
